Gardening tips for August 2010

Prune rambling roses by cutting out a 3rd of stems that have flowered, cut these down to the base
Remember to keep camellias well watered, especially potted ones. This helps them to form healthy buds. Feed with high potash feed for this month only
Summer prune trained apples and pear trees. This reduces vigour and lets in light and air to next years buds
Apply biological control for vine weevil
Raise mower blades and reduce frequency of cut to help lawns cope with draught conditions. Do not feed or use weedkillers when the ground is dry
Damp down greenhouses to raise humidity and lower temperature. Ventilate and shade conversavatories
Inspect indoor and greenhouse/conservatory plants for common pests and use suitable spray if you find any
Treat powcery mildew on roses and honeysuckle. Make sure they have plenty of water, keeping it off the leaves. Improve air circulation
Container plants need plenty of water and high potash feed such as tomato feed
Harvest onions, shallots and garlic once stems are brown and dry
Plant hyacinths, paperwhite narcissi and freesia for Christmas flowering
Summer prune wisteria. After you've tied in the long shoots you want to keep, cut the stems back to five shoots/buds. Feed with rose feed
